Mawah Josepha

We met Mawah Josepha in April 2002.

Mawah has worked at a pottery cooperative in Babunga, Cameroon, since 1995. She and her husband have a produce farm. They grow onions, maize, peanuts and peppers to sell in their local market.

To supplement their income, Mawah makes cups and bowls at the coop. However, her primary job there is making the bird water whistles that we sell.

Mawah is shown here with one of her 5 children. When I took this photo, her oldest was in fifth grade and her youngest were 5-month-old twins. She makes the whistles at home between tending to the children, cooking and helping with the farm work. At this rate, she can still make 10 whistles a day.

This arrangement is ideal for Mawah. She can earn an income while managing her other work. There are no other ways to do both in her community.

Her dream? To help provide for her family, to educate her children, and to have her own pottery business some day.
